Dudes! Christopher Pike read my blog!
No, seriously. He posted a comment here. I thought that was pretty damn cool. I’m always impressed by authors who communicate sincerely with fans, and Pike has a history of doing that since back in the days when the Internet was shiny and new. Christopher Pike had a huge impact on me in my teenage years, and seeing that comment made me get a bit girly and tingly. So, Mr. Pike, if you ever visit again and happen to read this…thanks for that.
As you can see, Pike focused solely on my paragraph about electromagnetism in my recap of Monster. Since the comment was posted publicly on this blog, I’m going to briefly respond to one particular sentence here, just to clarify a couple of things.
You need to study more modern physics before passing judgement on the science elements of my novel.
I get that Pike believes that magnets have an effect on the human body. A lot of people do. I personally don’t. And, believe it or not, I do know something about science and physics. My grandfather was a rocket engineer for NASA from the ’50s to the ’80s, and my dad is a chemical engineer. I was immersed in this shit growing up, and I have continued to study it throughout my life. My point in my recap was that, as someone with a Ph.D. in geology, Professor Alan Spark shouldn’t be espousing the belief that magnets affect humans, because it is not accepted by the scientific community. It would have been different had Angela received the magnet-theory information from a character outside of the mainstream scientific community.
Oh, and a random side note: my husband and I watched the new Star Trek movie on Friday (it was teh awesome), and we kept giggling whenever someone said Captain Pike’s full name, Christopher Pike.

Is “Congratulations!” appropriate here? That is the coolest thing ever! I love that he seriously just calls himself “Pike”. Wow, wow, wow!!
Oh God, I cannot imagine LJ Smith reading my blog without, IDK, calling her lawyer for defamation of unicorn.
I do kinda wonder if he ever ran across my Christopher Pike Plot Generator though.
…And by all that I meant, omg how cool for you! I thought I’d said that first, got distracted rereading the Generator, and came back and posted without reading over. Oops. :/
I KNOW I KNOW!!!! I was all giggly and jumping around, and repeatedly just saying, “Christopher Pike!” in disbelief. He also emailed me – his email said the same thing as the comment, but still, major coolness.
And Alana, I don’t know how I missed it when I read through your archives before, but I just now found your Christopher Pike Plot Generator. I laughed my ass off. Also, the phrase “defamation of unicorn” is supremely awesome.
OMGGG! That’s awesome!! Sadly, I doubt I will ever get such an honor, unless VCA comes back from the grave, or GW decides to poke around the internet.
Yes, I was pleased with both ideas. In fact, it saddens me to this day that the Plot Generator isn’t supremely popular, as it’s one of my favorite things ever, along with Megan’s Covers post and 99% of Like Pike and The Dairi Burger.
Megan – maybe we should try some spirit channeling. Who’s up for hosting Ms. Andrews in his/her body so she can read Megan’s blog??
Wow, that’s pretty amazing. I can only imagine what Francine would think if she read my blog, ha ha.
Squee! I’m jealous.
Are you sure it’s really him though? (If it is, very cool.) Like, I just wonder is it someone trying to be him to be funny? How would we know either way?
Sadako – I’m about 90% sure. He emailed me, too, and I recognized the email address immediately from back in the mid-’90s when he included it in his books’ author bio. (Which is probably a sad commentary on the kinds of things I deem important enough to remember for a decade.) He’s always been pretty active with the fan communities online. I found some old posts of his from a fan forum, and they had the same email address, and he signed them just as “Pike.”
Coollllll.
I live in fear of the day when Stine stumbles upon my blog. *gulp*
