My name is Whitney, and I’m having an early midlife crisis.
OK, that’s not entirely true…but neither is it entirely untrue. I’m facing down the big 3-0, and as such have officially entered into the late-20s freakout stage of “OMG what do you mean I’m supposed to be a grownup now?!?!” I have decided that the healthiest way to deal with this is to retreat into my adolescence.
I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, also known as the Golden Age of Young Adult Fiction. We’re talking Christopher Pike, R.L. Stine, L.J. Smith, Lois Duncan, Caroline B. Cooney…Sweet Valley High and Fear Street…books about teen girls who don’t think twice about killing each other over a boy but who wouldn’t dream of defiling themselves with sex. We’re talking vampires in high school, perfect California twins, and hey, by the way, you remember that thing you did last summer? Well, I KNOW ABOUT IT.
I feel an obligation to share the wealth of my pre-teen and teen years with the less fortunate. Here you’ll discover (or rediscover, if you happen to be an Enlightened One) the magic and wonder of ’80s and ’90s YA fiction. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the blast into my adolescent past.
